Swan Hunter shipyard, Tyneside
This painting depicts the Swan Hunter Wallsend shipyard on the River Tyne in 1988. On the left is HMS Marlborough a Type 23 Frigate near completion. Whilst under cover, work is being carried out on patrol vessels of the Ghananian Navy. To the right of the painting is the “Cable & Wireless Co” cable laying ship “CS Pacific Guardian”.
During an existence of 130 years the yard built over 1600 ships including 400 naval vessels. The yard unfortunately ceased shipbuilding in 2007.
